Seen, Not Shamed

Here's the thing that trips people up: if walking in the light meant you'd stopped sinning, John wouldn't need to mention Jesus' blood cleansing you in the very next breath, and he wouldn't need to say two verses later that anyone who claims to be sinless is lying to themselves. So the difference between light and dark was never sinning versus not sinning — it's seeing versus not seeing. In the dark you're not sinless, you're just blind to it. In the light you see your own mess clearly, and in the same instant you see the person who cleanses it. The light doesn't expose your sin to humiliate you — it exposes it because you can't confess what you've refused to look at, and what stays hidden never gets forgiven.
